The Sonnenberg of Vinschgau valley
is a very ancient settlement area where numerous ancient-history
discoveries from Neolithic Stone Age and Bronze Age
were made. Impressing indications are offered by the
“Schalensteine”
from Megalithic culture, rocks with artificial hollows
of various forms for ritual purposes.
Directly at the main road in Kastelbell is situated
Kastelbell Castle ,
still state-owned but administrated by the “Kuratorium
Schloß Kastelbell Gen.m.b.H.”.
The oldest frescos of all German-speaking countries
were painted in 770 and were found in the little church
of St. Prokulus
in Naturns.
Sacred art from Latsch is exhibited in the vaulted
chambers of the old hospital with particular attention
paid to
the works of Jörg Lederer.
A menhir stone
from the 3rd millennium B.C. can be admired in the near
church “Bichlkirche”. The chapel of St.
Stefan
near Montani Castle shelters frescos from the Lombardic
and Swabian area.
The Monastery Marienberg over Burgeis
village shelters a unique monument of Romanic art
. The frescos in the crypt from the years 1175 and 1180
were completely uncovered not before 1980.
Worth being seen are also the Romanic frescos with strong
Byzantine character in the St. Jakob chapel
between Glurns and Lichtenberg. It is owned by the Rizzis
who restored it exemplarily. It was inaugurated in 1996.
One of the most imposing and best-preserved fortifications
of South Tyrol rises up above Schluderns - the Churburg
Castle
. It was built in 1253 by the bishops of Chur (Switzerland).
The world-famous Hall of Arms contains precious, artistically
crafted arms and armour that were custom made for the
castle's proprietors throughout the ages. It is the
largest private collection of armaments of this kind.
